In a time of false peace, the dead rise as soldiers for the Warloc’s scheme. For thousands of years he has stood ready for the final battle. Though the witch and her cursed Elvin have destroyed his physical body, now with his protégé, he has honed a new way to wage war.

Shunned by her own people and weary-hearted from centuries of lost loves, Elvin warrior Mirhana scours the land to silence the undead. Her heart has turned as cold as the sword she wields, until a prince seeks her aid.

Never has Prince Landon met a woman like Mirhana. Both beautiful and deadly, she haunts his dreams. The battle at hand becomes more enchanting than fighting to remain true to his unseen betrothed.

When a traitor emerges, new alliances are tested and the only remaining hope is to follow the prophecy and find the … Son of Dragons.

Son of Dragons is a superbly written, fast-paced fantasy adventure with lots of twists and turns. The plot kept me guessing to the end and not everyone is as they seem—in fact, almost no one is.

Mirhana is a twin-born elf raised by witches due to a long held tradition that the one of any twins born are given to the witches as a sacrifice. But far from sacrificed, Mirhana is raised well and taught to use her magic to its maximum potential. Because she looks more human than elf, her powers tend to be underestimated by her enemies. And as a result of living centuries among the short-lived and physically vulnerable humans, she has learned not to get attached.

Prince Landon is heir to a large kingdom and betrothed to woman he’s never met for the benefit and protection of his people. While he is sought by an evil sorceress for reasons not quite clear early in the story, his heart is enraptured by the bold and brave Mirhana.

He and his companion join forces with Mirhana and her recently discovered twin to battle the mounting evil in their lands. The group of gifted warriors bands together on a quest to confront the unknown evil threatening their freedom and their lives.

In the process, Mirhana and Landon clash wits and wills and battle an obvious attraction that can never be—because Landon is betrothed and Mirhana has closed off herself to love.

But all is fair in love and magic and the two continually find themselves together and unable to deny the chemistry between them.

Son of Dragons is a harrowing adventure of epic proportions set in a world full of magic and mayhem. I barely had time to catch my breath before a new crisis arrived. For fans of Tolkein and romance, Son of Dragons will not disappoint. The world is rich and vibrant, but so fast-paced you better hold onto your butts.

I highly recommend this wonderful fantasy adventure romance.

Music As Inspiration: A Scene from A Taylor-Made Life

I find inspiration for my stories in everything from personal experience to candy. But my main source of inspiration for my life and the lives of my characters has always been music. Sometimes it’s just the emotion of the melody or it’s the story in the lyrics.

There is a scene in A Taylor-Made Life that is the direct inspiration of a song by Diamond Rio. I’ve always loved the song because it reminds me of my Granny who passed away over 30 years ago. I even used the song during my wedding reception during the Mother/Groom Father/Bride dance.

Here is the scene between Taylor and Gavin. Some have called it indulgent–it is. And cheesy–it’s probably that too, but it’s also the sweetest expression of Gavin’s heart and it’s every girls dream to be loved so much. I hope you enjoy the peek.

banner new sizeGavin whispered, “You know, I had a dream about heaven this morning.”

Taylor’s body tensed, and he trailed his fingers up and down her arm, tracing the bruises that appeared so easily because of the leukemia.

“I stood in a white fog. A voice I couldn’t place told me I could have whatever I wanted. A wish for anything.”

Taylor rested her chin on his chest and watched intently. “What did you wish for? Obviously not money. Health?”

He shook his head. “I wished for one more day with you. Because that seemed most like heaven to me.”

Her eyes sparkled with tears that never spilled.

He sighed wistfully. “I thought that was the best thing I could ask for. And now, today, I feel like I got my wish. But you know what I realize?”

“No.” It was a whisper, a plea.

“It’s not enough.” He cupped her cheek. “Because even an endless number would leave me wanting one more.”

She smiled. A tiny tear slipped from the corner of her eye down her cheek before he caught it with his finger and wiped it away. Then she kissed him.

Here is the song that provided the inspiration. I hope you enjoy.

When she discovers she’s pregnant, she believes the baby is Landon’s, the result of a miracle. To avoid her conservative family’s skepticism, she recruits Chase Evans, an Army buddy of her dead fiancé, to play the baby’s father. Chase, who has been romantically pursuing Hope and already half in love with her, agrees to play along.

Even after a fairytale wedding and the birth of a healthy baby, new evidence sheds doubt on who fathered her son, and Hope secretly looks for answers. When her search threatens her faith and her marriage, Hope must decide where her love and loyalty truly lies.

Merry Christmas!

My favorite Christian author, speaker, and poet is Michael Card. His ministry has spanned three decades of my walk with Christ. His words resonate with me.

Today I give you an excerpt from his book, Immanuel: Reflections on the Life of Christ.

The name Immanuel literally means God with Us, and I pray that today you have Immanuel!

Christmas is a struggle for my wife and me. Our ongoing war with the world seems to intensify as the decorations go up all over town. There is His name in every window. Sometimes there is even a statue of His sweet infant body, lying in some straw with shepherds and wise men standing around with blank porcelain expressions (I’ve always thought their faces convey the attitude of the world toward Christmas; blank, dazed and bewildered.) If people today would just look and the birth of Jesus “straight on,” they would be puzzled that we should celebrate such a horrific birth of a baby who was born to die. The contradictions should be more than the world can take. If Christianity could just be seen for what it is–a paradox and a mystery. The beginning in that dirty stable is one of the greatest mysteries: the plainness and greatness of Jesus, the grime and the glory. Wise men with gold in their hands and shepherds with sheep dung on their shoes. A smelly stable below and a shining star above. The birth of a gentle Lamb who was the fiercest Lion.

I hope you consider the paradox, delve into the “why,” and find an answer. May the Christmas Spirit truly reveal Himself to you and in you this season, and may you walk in blessings this new year!

You can find Michael’s books and music at Amazon and information about him on his website.

Two sexy English brothers. One irresistible ghost. Who would you choose as your lover?

Completely broke and with a criminal record to boot, Senna Smith is one day from eviction from her apartment when Brendon, her promiscuous roommate from London, suggests she go to England, marry him, and manage his fortune. With few other options, she agrees to an open marriage. But she’ll never, ever, have sex with him, knowing if she falls in love with him, he’ll break her heart.

As trustee of Brendon’s family fortune, there is no way Brendon’s older brother, Garrison Durran, is going to let him marry a self-professed American gold-digger. As Senna tries to embrace castle life and English society for Brendon’s sake, Gar discovers Senna is the perfect woman for him–beautiful and intelligent, kind and caring. Now, if she wasn’t already engaged to his brother…

The ancestral ghost of Durran Castle has to intervene if the Durran brothers have any chance of an heir. He can’t leave them to fix matters on their own. They are useless buggers when it comes to love. As counselor to Gar, matchmaker for Brendon, and lover to Senna, a ghost’s work is never done.

Excerpts

Excerpt 1

“So my brother steals all your money and to compensate you, he suggests you come to England, marry him, and he’ll give you his trust fund.” Only his brother could contrive such an absurd plan.

“Yes.” By her brief answer, he gathered she thought it a perfectly reasonable solution.

His brother might be an idiot, but this gold digger would soon discover Gar a force to reckon with. “Did he steal a half million from your bank account?”

Brendon laughed. “Do you have any idea how long that would take? Cash machines only allow you two visits a day at two hundred dollars a pop.”

“How much did he take?” Gar restated his question.

“Four hundred,” Senna replied.

Gar stared up at the ceiling praying for patience, then glared at Ditz. “So why didn’t you pay her back the four hundred?”

Ditz stubbornly refused to answer, and instead glanced at the girl.

She sighed and faced Gar. “Precisely what I asked. He said he didn’t have the four hundred, but if I married him, he would come into a half million. Since the landlord planned to evict me, I really had no choice but to accept the offer.”

Excerpt 2

Senna woke to her breast beeping. Trying to make sense of the oddity, she pushed herself up to rest on her elbows and discovered the noise came from Brendon’s wristwatch. Somehow, his hand had found its way beneath her bra during the night, and now chirped like a baby chick.

She contemplated tearing his hand off at the wrist, but he looked so angelic with his curly dark hair framing his handsome face. With a heavy sigh, she unlatched her bra and eased his hand out, then gently shook him until his face scrunched into a pained grimace.

He groaned and frowned at his noisy watch. “This is a god-awful hour to be woken up,” he said in his sexy British accent. “Never bothers me when I’m coming home at this hour.”

Senna rolled her eyes. “Speak for yourself.”

Pushing himself up, he shook his head. “Remember the second night I came around? You kept yelling at me, ‘Did I realize it was four in the morning?’ At the time, I couldn’t understand your fuss.” He groaned and scratched his scalp. “Well, I certainly understand it now. It’s bloody hell to be woken at this ungodly hour.”

Excerpt 3

Brendon moved to the window and stared out. “I don’t think you realized how bad things became for me when Nan died. I’d lost the only person who cared for me. I had no one left. The million dollars I lost on a roulette wheel wasn’t done just to get rid of the cook. I did it to get your attention. While you didn’t give a shit about me, you’ve always loved money. And it worked. You finally noticed me.”

“And sent you away,” Gar said with remorse.

“Yeah.” Brendon turned and gave him a faint smile. “Not exactly the response I’d hoped for, but it turned out all right. I met Senna and since then life keeps getting easier with each day. Now I find I even like you most of the time.”

“Well, the feeling is mutual. You’re still eccentric, but you’ve a good heart and good intent, and I’m proud you’re my brother.”

Suddenly the door opened and Senna walked in looking at both men with concern. “Are you two having a fight?”

“Not at all.” Brendon smiled. “In fact, Gar told me he’s proud I’m his brother.”

Senna’s eyes filled with appreciation as she grinned at Gar.

Her smile almost broke Gar’s heart. God help him, but Brendon had nailed the truth. He did love Senna, and more than anything, he wanted her to be his wife.

Movie Review: Beyond the Farthest Star

facebook-masterheadLast weekend, my cousin and I left the husbands with the kids for our quarterly Mom’s Movie Night. I had gotten tickets to see a film I’d been waiting over a decade for–and I wasn’t disappointed.

Beyond the Farthest Star written and directed by Andrew Librizzi begins with a once-famous preacher and his small troubled family moving to the rural town of Leonard, Texas. They are hoping to make a fresh start, and Leonard is a perfect little place to keep all their secrets–the very things that were destroying their relationships with each other and with God, the things that kept them from living and forced them to hide from the only thing that could help–the truth.

But God, as He often does, refuses to let them live lies. He sets in motion a string of events that brings everything into the light where no darkness can hide.

The story is told in quick clips and edits that escalates from the very first scene. As the story progresses, the wave of conflict and emotion between each of the three main characters builds with swift intensity. The microcosm of their lives is so rich in depth and honesty, it’s hard not to love them, feel sorry for them, and root for them to find their happily ever after.

So moving and emotional with a message of hope that shines like a thousand stars. You can’t help but feel the hurt, betrayal, vulnerability of each member of the family. The story reaches into your heart and touches in a personal way. My heart ached for Ann and Adam, longing for them to find the closeness they’d shared–reconciling the hearts of the children to their fathers. Such a powerful message; such a powerful movie!

Character Inspiration – Gavin and Taylor from A Taylor-Made Life

When I envision my characters as I’m writing them, I usually have a rough idea of their physical traits. At some point during the writing of the story I get on the internet and surf for that perfect picture of them. Sometimes it’s someone well-known other times it’s just a stock photo.

With a Taylor-Made Life, I knew exactly what each of the main characters looked like even before I started writing. They came to me fully formed. And while these actors make a good guide for Gavin and Taylor, the details like eye color, hair color, body type may be different. But in my mind this is generally how I see them.

Milo_Ventimigliagavin1Gavin Taylor age 25 is best represented by Milo Ventimiglia. I love that Milo has a contrasting maturity and boyishness about him that captures Gavin so perfectly. He looks smart, sweet and sexy.

Dianna-Agron1TaylorTaylor Marie Smith age 17 is best represented by Dianna Agron. She’s a beautiful bundle of effervescent enthusiasm and bubbly optimism. Her smile lights up a room and that’s exactly how I envision Taylor.

So tell me – If you’ve read A Taylor-Made Life, How do you see Gavin and Taylor?

And if you haven’t read A Taylor-Made Life, you can go get it right now.

“A Taylor-Made Life is one of the best books I’ve read this year and it’s not one I’ll soon forget… Taylor and Gavin stole my heart and my breath, and I wasn’t ready to let them go.” – Nikki Barrett, Storm Goddess Book Reviews
